MY HEART IS FIXED
“He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.” Psalm 112:7, 8
What a testimony and challenge from the heart of the Psalmist, “his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD,” and “His heart is established.” We all realize how fickle and easily influenced our hearts can be. It is possible to be shouting the victory one day and be seriously discouraged the next. The thought of what might happen or the news of something negative can put us into a spiritual panic. Though our circumstances change and our emotions fluctuate, God and His Word are constant.
Like the writer of the Psalm, we need for our hearts to be fixed. What does it mean to have a heart that is fixed? It suggests a greatly needed attribute in life: consistency. In far too many people this is lacking; instead of permanency, there is inconsistency and instability. This can be just as true in adults as in young people, and in men as well as in women. Sincere commitments are often made, only to soon be forgotten, because the heart is not fixed. Good intentions should never be confused with sincere vows and accompanying actions.
In an ever changing world, let us learn to have hearts that are fixed and established. This stability of life is directly associated to our relationship with God. It is not simply mind over matter or the power of positive thinking. Rather than being “afraid of evil tidings” we are to be “trusting in the LORD.” God never promised a problem-free journey, but He did promise to be with us in every trial with grace that is more than sufficient. We cannot afford to let our spiritual condition be affected by every negative report that crosses our mind, or every bit of adversity that we find in our path. Rather than allowing our attitudes to be subject to our daily situations, we are to learn to trust God whatever comes our way.
A daily and determined faith in God and reliance on His person and promises will produce a heart that is fixed. A vacillating heart is the result of inconsistent dependence on God. Having a heart that is fixed is not simply the result of a determined mind, but also the influence of a gracious God. He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. A person’s heart is strengthened and steadied by unwavering confidence in God.
