NO MAN CARED FOR MY SOUL
“I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.” Psalm 142:4
Have you ever felt that way, like “no man cared for my soul?” David was in a great strait. Saul was in pursuit and David was in hiding. He needed to know that someone cared for him. He cried unto the Lord in his despair. A portion of his complaint is found in our text. There seemed to be no one that cared for him. He could find no one that seemed to regard his condition or welfare.
It is a sad place to be when it appears that there is no one that has compassion on us or can relate to the difficulties we are passing through. What a blessing it is to have a network of support and friends that love us and care for us! God said to the first man, Adam, that it was not good for him to be alone. This does not mean that we are never to have times of solitude, for we need those times to reflect, pray, and fellowship with the Lord. However, everyone needs companionship. This has often led people to associate with others who are not a good Christian influence, because they so desperately felt the need of friendship. We all need someone to share with. In our text, David was discouraged because he found no one to care for his soul. This is one of the many wonderful benefits of belonging to a New Testament church. It is in that relationship and fellowship that we find encouragement and reinforcement from those of like mind. Although we may go through dark valleys at times and carry heavy burdens, we can thankfully say that there have always been concerned believers around to support us when we needed it.
However, there could come a time when we, like David, search for some helpful companionship and find none. In those times, we can know that in Christ we have a strong and faithful Friend. He has promised that He will always be there for us. There will never be a time when we are separated from Someone who cares for us. People can certainly help and strengthen us, but Jesus wants us to look to Him and lean on Him for support and encouragement. He is able to comfort us and care for us as no other. Let’s remember also, there are many lonely and desperate people in our world who need to know that God loves them and cares deeply for their souls. May we point them to One who cares.
