WHERE IS BOASTING THEN?

Pastor Thomas Smith   -

“Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.” Romans 3:27

“Where is boasting then?” Of what have we to boast when it comes to the matter of our eternal salvation? Boasting “is excluded.” There is no place for boasting. Our salvation is altogether a work of the amazing grace of God. We cannot boast of our personal worth or merit. We dare not boast of our goodness. We cannot boast of our ability or piety. We cannot boast of our spiritual interest or sincerity. We are what we are by the grace of God.

How could we ever thank Him enough for His love and kindness? “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6). When we could not go to where He was, He came to us. He came to seek and to save those that are lost. He found us in our foolish pride. He loved us when we were so unworthy. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). He looked beyond our faults and saw our needs. He suffered and died in our place. He took our sins upon His sinless body. He bore our rebellion on the cross of Calvary. He paid the entire price for our complete and eternal salvation. He offered salvation to all who will by faith receive Him.

He showed us our need. He brought the Gospel to us. His love drew us. He opened our blinded eyes. He showed us the way. He wrought repentance and faith in our hearts. He redeemed us from a life of sin and shame. We are justified freely through His blood. He birthed us into His forever family, indwelt us by the Holy Spirit, and sealed us unto the day of redemption.

Oh, that He would save such wicked sinners as we! We were filled with ourselves and on a road that would have led us to an eternity of torment in hell. We were without hope, without purpose, and without God. Thank God forever for all that He has done.

“Where is boasting then?” We have nothing in ourselves of which to boast, not in our religion, our works, nor our worth. Our boasting, our glory is in the cross of Jesus Christ. It is not in our righteousness, for we have none without Him. We boast of His mercy and His grace. We boast of His precious and persistent love. We boast of His eternal gift of salvation offered to the most undeserving of sinners.
